Reading to a Child (Entry 3) is designed to equip candidates with the skills to read aloud to a child. The qualification involves selecting a book to read to children with vocal and facial expression suitable for the age group. Candidates will develop communication skills by working in a group with peers, tutors and support workers resulting in increased confidence and self-esteem. This syllabus provides evidence towards the Every Child Matters Outcomes Framework and meets the National Curriculum Level 3 Attainment Target 1 for English: Speaking and Listening and the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum at Entry 3.
The candidates should choose a child’s story book with pictures e.g. The Gruffalo, The Biggest Bed in the World, Each Peach Pear Plum. They should read the book out loud for a child or children, bringing the story alive and using a full range of vocal skills, they should try to keep the child/ children interested and involved throughout.Close
Using the story book, the candidates should point out illustrations and comment about them to keep the child/children involved. Questions could be put to the child/children related to the story and illustrations e.g. “How many balloons can you see?” “Where has the Gruffalo gone?” or encourage the child/children to join in a chorus or repeat the phrases.Close
A photograph or object can be brought to the session about a special time e.g. a family outing, a birthday party, a visit to the zoo or beach, a religious festival. Tell the child/ children what was worn, or eaten, the time of the event and where it took place. Clear communication with enthusiasm for the subject and maintain their interest and understanding.Close
Candidates should listen and share in a conversation with the children, candidates or assessor about the book or special item. Supportive and helpful open questions can be put to the group and candidates should also encourage questions from the group.Close
