{"id":15239,"date":"2022-11-02T09:02:01","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T09:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/?p=15239"},"modified":"2022-11-02T09:02:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T09:02:01","slug":"igniting-the-power-of-talk-through-oracy-workshops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/index.php\/igniting-the-power-of-talk-through-oracy-workshops\/","title":{"rendered":"Igniting the power of TALK through Oracy Workshops\ufffc"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"15248\" src=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/app\/uploads\/2022\/11\/c6c2647a-ccc0-404f-98f9-5fc13b265bd8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15248\"\/><figcaption>Lulu and Tara with learners at the workshop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"15246\" src=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/app\/uploads\/2022\/11\/a46f82a5-a493-49ae-9c32-c8c93e25dfa5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15246\"\/><figcaption>Lulu with two learners<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>ESB assessor Lulu Dale led a number of oracy workshops at the WayWord Festival held at Chester\u2019s Storyhouse Theatre, this October half-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating the power of words, the WayWord Festival is designed for young people, offering them an exciting and inspiring programme of events and activities to fire up their imagination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key speakers at the festival included famous poets, Benjamin Zephaniah (pictured with Lulu Dale below), Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Julian Clary and Nick Sharratt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/app\/uploads\/2022\/11\/11852511-b1d8-4c8d-a46c-4c436126762c.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15245\" width=\"398\" height=\"530\"\/><figcaption>Benjamin Zephaniah and ESB&#8217;s Assessor, Lulu Dale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lulu, together with curriculum expert, Tara Jones, encouraged learners\u2019 confidence in communication and fostered creativity during the interactive sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young people were given the opportunity to take to the stage and&nbsp;share in speaking and listening with others&nbsp;in small groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents also had the opportunity to talk with Lulu and Tara&nbsp;as&nbsp;they&nbsp;explained the importance of modelling and teaching spoken language&nbsp;and listening skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>One learner, Alex said: \u201cThe workshop helped me to express my mind!&#8221;, with another parent, Jade Palmer adding, \u201cThe workshop was absolutely fantastic. We were so impressed with Lulu!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Famous poet, activist, novelist, actor and broadcaster, Benjamin Zephaniah, says about Storyhouse:<\/strong><\/em> <em><strong>\u201cI wish I had something like this when I was growing up\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lulu adds, \u201cI thoroughly enjoyed leading the fun, interactive sessions and witnessing the huge impact they had on these young people\u2019s oracy skills. With the same goal as ESB assessments, the workshops provided children with a platform and opportunity to speak about what matters the most to them and listen to other members of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Similar to the workshops, the majority of ESB\u2019s Speech assessments are carried out in groups where learners are assessed individually \u2013 replicating real life opportunities for speaking and listening.&nbsp;At ESB, we understand the importance of possessing key communication skills and we\u2019re here to support our learners to develop them.
