This week, we are focusing on the theme, \u201c<strong>Oracy for School and Education<\/strong>\u201d, highlighting the vital role of oracy in enhancing educational experiences and outcomes for all learners, particularly those with significant learning needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Week 2 of ESB&#039;s Oracy for All Campaign\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJygbj-IIOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Oracy Matters?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ffd2dd\">A report by the Sutton Trust reveals that students who are articulate and can express themselves effectively, are more likely to pursue higher education and go on to secure professional employment. These verbal communication skills are critical for social mobility, emphasising how oracy can shape future opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past three years, ESB has collected and analysed data from Abbey Hill Academy and College, a special school located in Stoke on Trent, offering valuable insights into learner progress following the completion of ESB\u2019s oracy qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For learners measured against national curriculum statements for KS3:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-background wp-block-list\" style=\"background-color:#ffeff3\"><li><strong>70% of learners<\/strong> improved their proficiency in two key areas:<\/li><li>Using Standard English confidently in a range of formal and informal contexts.<\/li><li>Enhancing their ability to use role, intonation, tone, volume, mood, silence, stillness, and action to add impact.<\/li><li><strong>65%<\/strong> of learners demonstrated improvements in speaking confidently, audibly, and fluently, with an additional <strong>5%<\/strong> showing further significant progress.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>60% of learners showed improvement in participating in formal debates and\/or discussions, summarising and building on what has been said, with 10% advancing even further.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina Renshaw, ESB\u2019s Chief Executive, says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In our commitment to unlocking potential through speaking and listening skills, we recognise that oracy is not just an add-on; it is an essential component of effective education. By developing these skills, we enable learners with significant learning needs to engage fully in their academic lives, enhancing their confidence and communication abilities. ESB\u2019s assessment methodology provides real opportunity for learners to exert individual agency and learners feel more confident after completing their assessment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/our-teacher-resources\/speech-resources\/building-confidence-in-communication-resources\/\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/our-teacher-resources\/speech-resources\/building-confidence-in-communication-resources\/\">Oracy Teacher Resources designed specifically for learners with significant learning needs<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To support educators in fostering oracy skills in the classroom, ESB offers a comprehensive range of <a href=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/our-teacher-resources\/speech-resources\/building-confidence-in-communication-resources\/\">Teacher Resources<\/a>, specifically designed to help isolate and practice effective speaking and listening skills. These resources include three groups of activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Everyday interaction<\/li><li>Giving a presentation<\/li><li>Fine-tuning the message<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These activities can be easily adapted for students working at various levels, ensuring that all learners can benefit from them. They can be adapted and differentiated for students working at different levels, and there are also some tips on&nbsp;inclusive practice&nbsp;in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Real Voices, Real Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We have a long-standing relationship with English Speaking Board, and all of our students have the opportunity to take the assessment each year.
