{"id":2559,"date":"2019-02-07T16:36:49","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T16:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/?p=2559"},"modified":"2019-02-07T16:36:49","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T16:36:49","slug":"character-and-resilience-as-important-as-gcses-for-young-people-says-damian-hinds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/index.php\/character-and-resilience-as-important-as-gcses-for-young-people-says-damian-hinds\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Character and resilience&#8221; as important as GCSEs for young people says Damian Hinds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Education Secretary addressed the Church of England Foundation for Educational Leadership conference in London this morning to stress the importance of instilling confidence and character in every child.<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2560\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2560\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2560 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/esbuk.org\/web\/app\/uploads\/2019\/02\/damian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hinds declared that he wishes to &#8220;call time&#8221; on the phrase &#8220;public-school confidence&#8221;, arguing that such confidence should not be reserved for privately educated children only.<\/p>\n<p>Hinds went on to present his &#8220;five foundations to build character&#8221;: sport, creativity, performing, volunteering and membership and the world of work. He promises to increase schools&#8217; access to these activities, ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to test themselves from a range of activities which all contribute to their overall character and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>With oracy skills playing a major role in all of Hinds&#8217; &#8220;five foundations to build character&#8221; the initiative is warmly welcomed by English Speaking Board (International). ESB&#8217;s qualifications are specifically designed to boost pupils&#8217; confidence through oracy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.6rem; letter-spacing: -0.01em;\">Says Tina Renshaw, Chief Executive,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 1.6rem; letter-spacing: -0.01em;\"> We strongly support the Education Secretary&#8217;s speech on &#8220;rethinking resilience&#8221; in schools. Our qualifications give young people the opportunity they need to realise their talent and self-worth, as well as giving them a structure of how to speak clearly and with confidence.
