English Speaking Board (International) Ltd. fully supports the Greater London Authority (GLA)’s proposal to fund ESOL courses for learners in London up to Entry 3.

One in three Londoners were born outside the UK, and more than 300 languages are spoken on our streets. More than 50% of the country’s ESOL provision takes place in the capital. Proficiency in the English language is a prerequisite for most jobs and career progression in the capital, but some 210,000 working age adults in London report that they cannot speak English very well.

Despite this clear necessity to learn English, government funding for ESOL provision has yo-yoed in recent years. The Mayor of London has called on the government to reverse these cuts in order to effectively improve English language and literacy among Londoners.

From 2020/21, the Mayor proposes to fully fund ESOL provision up to Entry Level 3—the level of English required for British Citizenship. Creating an entitlement for ESOL to this level shows that London is open to talent and will support Londoners to get the skills they need to succeed. Given the demand for ESOL in London, the Mayor will also conduct a focused review on the quality and delivery of ESOL provision in the capital. He plans to invest £4.5 million in London’s ESOL sector: using European Social Funding to address gaps in provision for those with the lowest levels of literacy, and supporting ESOL practitioners to develop their teaching skills, improving the quality of provision in London.

Founded in 1953 on a promise ‘to encourage ease and access in everyday communication and discussion’, this decision to ensure English language provision is accessible to those who need it resonates strongly with ESB, which recognises and encourages the potential of all learners. In fact, ESB is so committed to supporting schools, colleges and learners, that it established its very own Christabel Burniston Fund, named in honour of its founder, which supports disadvantaged learners, discounts fees and subsidises training for teachers to support ESB assessments.

ESB International’s Chief Executive, Tina Renshaw, says, “The Mayor’s plans to fund ESOL courses will have a huge impact on learners and colleges in London, and will ultimately help Londoners achieve the necessary skills for integration and employment in the UK.

Being a part of your community through the ability to listen and talk with your neighbours and co-workers;  visit a doctor;  share experiences and worries with other mums and dads, is how we build understanding, empathy and tolerance.

We fully back this decision and are excited about what this could hold for our ESOL learners.”

ESB’s Business Adviser (ESOL) Jackie Johnson, adds: “ESB runs ESOL courses in FE colleges, charities and Adult Education centres across the Greater London Area, including centres with large numbers of ESOL learners, such as College of North West London and Stanmore College. Last year alone, ESB assessed over 22,600 ESOL learners, demonstrating the sheer scale of those seeking English language skills for life in the UK.

With the number of learners taking ESB ESOL courses increasing every year, there is no question of the demand to learn English language skills in the UK. ESB is proud to support Londoners to acquire the skills they need to succeed.

  • ESB is launching a new Speech pathways qualification

English Speaking Board (International) Ltd. has improved the single unit ESB Level 2 Certificate in Speech (Grade 4) to give teachers and learners more options and flexibility to explore oracy in the classroom.

Adding new pathway options will provide teachers with more options and the flexibility to explore oracy in the classroom in different contexts to suit the needs of their learners.

ESB surveyed over 160 centres in relation to its portfolio of Speech qualifications. The results showed that schools would like greater choice for their learners and more opportunities for advancing their communication skills. ESB responded to this feedback by working on redesigning the ESB Level 2 Certificate in Speech (Grade 4).

The updated and improved qualification will contain three exciting new units for teachers to choose from. Please click here to see these pathway options in full.

The new options include using speech to inform an audience, for performance, or for employability. The addition of these pathways options were formulated to ensure ESB’s portfolio of Speech qualifications remain relevant and accessible to all learners.

ESB has begun piloting the pathways qualification in a number of centres to see how teachers and learners respond to the new options before its launch in September 2019.

Effective communication is crucial for young people in achieving success in education, employment and life, and ESB strive to ensure every learner is given the opportunity to realise their potential through oracy.

  • “Character and resilience” as important as GCSEs for young people says Damian Hinds

The Education Secretary addressed the Church of England Foundation for Educational Leadership conference in London this morning to stress the importance of instilling confidence and character in every child.
Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education

Hinds declared that he wishes to “call time” on the phrase “public-school confidence”, arguing that such confidence should not be reserved for privately educated children only.

Hinds went on to present his “five foundations to build character”: sport, creativity, performing, volunteering and membership and the world of work. He promises to increase schools’ access to these activities, ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to test themselves from a range of activities which all contribute to their overall character and resilience.

With oracy skills playing a major role in all of Hinds’ “five foundations to build character” the initiative is warmly welcomed by English Speaking Board (International). ESB’s qualifications are specifically designed to boost pupils’ confidence through oracy.

    Says Tina Renshaw, Chief Executive,

We strongly support the Education Secretary’s speech on “rethinking resilience” in schools. Our qualifications give young people the opportunity they need to realise their talent and self-worth, as well as giving them a structure of how to speak clearly and with confidence. We are excited to see character education spark interest in government decisions.

Hrishi Venkatesh (ESB Ambassador) and Tina Renshaw (Chief Executive, CEO)

English Speaking Board (International) Ltd. was delighted to showcase one of its Ambassadors on BBC Breakfast television this morning.

Hrishi Vankatesh, one of ESB’s newest Ambassadors, spoke about how he has become a confident communicator through his ESB assessments. He also shared his top tips for people who are nervous of speaking in public.

He also spoke about his personal journey being diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum and how ESB has helped him to grow in confidence and communicate well with others.

Please watch Hrishi speak on BBC Breakfast in the clip below.

ESB’s Chief Executive, Tina Renshaw accompanied Hrishi to the BBC studios, and says, “We enjoyed an exciting morning taking part in a topical dialogue on the importance of oracy. Hrishi spoke eloquently to the BBC audience of over 1.5 million viewers. It was very supportive of presenter Dan Walker to take such a personal interest in the issue by tweeting to his 515,000 followers about the value of public speaking.”

On the programme, Hrishi, said: “When I started with English Speaking Board, it really helped to boost my confidence and just made me feel like people wanted to hear what I wanted to say.”

Tina added: “Hrishi’s performance on BBC Breakfast follows his recent appearance at the Houses of Parliament speaking on ESB’s behalf on the subject of oracy. He is also joining us at our Young Speaker of the Year event in November, as a worthy winner of our ESB Ambassador award.

“ESB supports schools, young people’s groups, colleges and universities to build confidence in communicating, speaking and listening.  We have a fantastic track record for 65 years in giving young people a voice, oracy skills and a recognised qualification. We’d love to hear how we can support you.”
