Communication Skills within a Group (Entry 1) (QCF) is designed to build confidence in communication in a group context. Candidates will develop communication skills by working in a group with peers, tutors and support workers resulting in increased confidence and self-esteem. The syllabus provides evidence towards Every Child Matters Outcomes Framework and the level aligns with Achievement Continuum Stage 10 Application. It also meets the National Curriculum Level 1 Attainment Target 1 for English: Speaking and Listening and the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum Entry 1.


Communication Skills within a Group (Entry 1) (QCF)

Candidates should prepare an individual aspect of the Group Topic. This could include a group visit, residential, student enterprise or any other item of student interest or study i.e cultures, religions, recycling or environment etc. They should bring a poster or visual aid, speak clearly and bring to an appropriate ending. They should try to express their personal opinions and may also use prepare a PowerPoint presentation with images only.


a) Following their introduction of a prepared reading of about 100 words and related to the group topic, candidates should share enthusiastically with the group and try to bring the words to life. They must also be prepared to answer questions from their peers

b) Candidates must show that they can listen to others during a discussion based on the group theme and talk in a natural way. They must be prepared to respond to questions and try to make a positive contribution also allowing others to take their turn.


Candidates will take part in a group performance linked to their group topic.  This can be in any genre - choral verse speaking, song, dance or mime. And may be supported by the tutor and support staff.  The candidate will be expected to maintain their role in the piece and show awareness of others within the group.


Candidates will recognise the importance of good listening skills when communicating with others. Throughout the assessment candidates will communicate with their peers, listening carefully, responding politely to questions, making eye contact where possible and asking suitable straightforward questions of the peer group.
