The ESB Level 1 Award in Speech (Grade 3) promotes oracy and is designed to develop learners’ presentational skills and build their confidence in self-expression. The target learner group is Year 8 students. The qualification is mapped to National Curriculum requirements in Spoken English at Key Stages 3. All assessment is external, in your school at a time to suit you.
Deliver a well-structured talk on any topic, with evidence of personal research/ enquiry. The talk should last around 4 minutes. Include opinions and advice, using visual aids. Candidates might talk about: An Historical Event; Crystals; The Work of Salvador Dali; A Music Festival. Practise working in small groups. If candidates work in groups of 6, they can discuss and help each other. Brief, key word notes and/or PowerPoint pictures may be used – guidance should be given on this, and the examiner may ask to see any cue cards.Close
Tell listeners what determined your choice, or explain the context, then speak from memory a chosen piece of poetry, drama or prose. The extract should last around 2 minutes.Close
